With the liberalization policies being implemented throughout the length and width of the earth the skies are always ready to open up in a large scale and travel by air is going to be the order of the day owing to the congestions in the road and rail traffic is increased sever folds by every minute. The future bows them who act swift at present.

Student Visa
who needs a visa?

All Non-US citizens are required to be on a student training visa to complete a course of flight training in the US. A course is considered to be flight training when it is towards a license, certificate or rating. Examples are a Private, Commercial, Airline Transport Pilots License, ground or flight training, Multi Engine class certification, Instrument Rating, etc.

AsiaticAir  is NOT an approved  school, Our Affiliated  company in USA “ is approved by the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to issue M-1 training visas to overseas students training here in the US. This Visa allows students to legally train in the US for up to 12 months (subject to their course), and is renewable for up to five years. This visa can be validated for multiple entry to the USA.

Some US Embassies require a personal interview. AsiaticAir suggests that upon completion of the enrollment form you contact the US Embassy nearest your current residence for an interview date. The interview date can be the next days or it may be 6-8 weeks in advance, it varies US Embassy to US Embassy. The INS will require proof that funds are available for the full course of training, and that you have a permanent address to return to in your home country. Holders of M-1 Student Visas need not purchase a return air ticket.

Who doesn't need a visa?

License holders who are just coming to the USA to build hours are not required to hold a student visa and may enter the country on the Visa Waiver Program (if a passport holder of a member country) or a B type visa (if your country is not part of the Visa waiver program), as long as you are not required to gain a license to fly (the conversion offered by the FAA office is not considered flight training).

Persons entering on a Visa Waiver or B type visa will be required to hold a return air ticket

Visa Requirements for Flying and Training in the U.S.A.

Look at numbers 1 to 5, to decide whether or not need a Visa. If you are required to have a Visa, it is very important to make sure you understand the steps you must follow. The process is straight forward and there are people that will help you every step of the way.

On the 12th of April 2002 the immigration rules changed and affected flight training in the U.S.A.

Who needs a Visa and what type will you need:

1) If you are coming to hour build or a flying holiday and have a FAA License or an FAA license issued on the basis of your Foreign License, you can enter the country on a Visa Waiver and fly as long as you meet the F.A.R.s. (BFR, Medical, etc.)

2) If you need to convert your license to a Restricted F.A.A. License, you will need to submit the request to the F.A.A. in Oklahoma City so they can do a full background check; this process takes upwards of 60 days. If you get the o.k. to convert your license you can enter the country on a Visa Waiver.

If you do not have the time to wait to convert your license, you can take the F.A.A. Written Test and the Flight Test in order to get an Unrestricted F.A.A. License. In order to do this you will need to be on an F-1, M-1, or J-1 Visa. (Since you are seeking a License/Rating)

If you decide not to convert your license and just fly on an F.A.A. Student Solo Certificate, you will once again need to be on an F-1, M-1, or J-1 Visa. (Since it is a Student License)

3) Going to the U.S.A. in order to train for a J.A.A. or F.A.A. License. You must be on a F-1, M-1, J-1 Visa. (Since you are seeking a License/Rating)

4) If you are coming to the U.S.A. in order to revalidate you license, either F.A.A. or J.A.A., you can come on a Visa Waiver since that is a currency requirement and you are not adding a Rating/License. This is subject to change since the authorities are looking at this situation and there are people in I.N.S. which want this to require a Visa.

5) If you have entered the U.S.A. on holiday and while here decided to do flight training. Should you want to train in the U.S.A. after you arrive in the U.S.A. and are on a B Visa, you can apply to change your status to F-1/M-1/J-1 Visa and must wait till your status is changed before you can begin training. If you entered the U.S.A. on a Visa Waiver, you will have to leave the country, obtain the appropriate Visa and then return to train. The Visa Waiver is NOT a Visa and therefore you do not have a Visa to change status on.

Where do you find the information?
If you have any questions about what Visas you are required to have, contact the U.S. Embassy in your country. They are the direct source. Anything else is "hear say", even this thread is technically "hear say". The U.S. Embassy will give you definitive answers on any requirements on entering the U.S.A.

F A Qs

1.    What is the entry-level qualification for a pilot to join an airline and what does he join as?

A:   The min. requirement that any airline generally wants is a pilot to have is a basic Commercial Pilots License, with an Instrument Rating and preferably a Multi Engine rating. When the pilot joins an airline, he joins as a trainee pilot and then he undergoes the various training program conducted by the airline as per their requirements. Once successfully completing theses training programs one is released to fly as a first Officer (often called as Co- Pilot).

2.    Can I join this course if I have studies Commerce or Arts?

A:    Yes u can definitely join this course and pursue a career as an airline pilot provided you have cleared the 10+2 level exam from a recognized board. But in the case of Commerce or an Arts Student, he/she will have to appear for an isolated paper in math’s and physics at the 10+2 level from a recognised education board.

3.    Is the FAA, CAA, JAA  or  Indian CPL valid anywhere else in the world?

A:    Yes, Certainly the FAA, CAA or  Indian CPL is valid all over the world and it is fully convertible to a license of any other country as per the rules of that country.

4.    How does an Airline Choose its Pilots ?

A:    Usually an airline will place an ad in the leading newspaper of the country and then call for applications, Once received they will then short list the candidates for a written exam, if successful in the written exam they would want them to undergo a IPT test (Instrument Practical trainer test) which is done on a basic procedure trainer like the ATC 710. The last block is that of a personal interview which is conducted to assess the individual’s personality and temperament. (May differ from employer to employer)

5.    How does one choose which aircraft to fly as a basic aircraft to be included in the license as a rating?

A:    One can choose any aircraft below a weight of 1,500 Kgs; in this category a lot of options are available like the Cessna 152. The basic criteria in choosing the aircraft is easy availability, low maintenance, safe, easy to fly and understand etc.

6.    Can I join the air force with a CPL or how do I join the air force ?

A:    One cannot join the air force with a CPL since the air force has different criteria for selection and their training methods are very different as they fly a different category of aircraft and fly it for a different purpose from the one employed in training you as a commercial pilot. In order to join the air force one can either go through the NDA or through the short service commission. But for a flying job in the air force one has to go through the NDA.

7.    Who is the potential employer for a pilot with a basic CPL in our country ?

A:    One can be employed with Air- India, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Air Sahara, The Indian Coast Guard, various flying schools employee you as an instructor and also flying schools outside India can employ you.

8.    What is the Minimum height that one must have in order to become a pilot ?

A:    There is no particular height one has to have, the individuals legs should reach the rudder pedals when he has his hands on the control and he should be able to see outside over the instrument panel.

9.    What is the eyesight one must have? Are glasses permissible ?

A:    Yes, One can have glasses and still be flying as a commercial pilot; the max glass power allowed in aviation is ± 3, which is again at the discretion of the medical examiner. Your glasses power can increase with age.

10.   What are the reasons for one not to clear in the medical examination ?

A:    A normal human being will not fail the medical examination unless something is severely wrong with his body like a hole in the heart, migraine, Colour blindness, asthma, epilepsy, polio etc

Air Hostess /  Flight Purser

Introduction  :

Imagine yourself up there in the azure sky, moving in and out between fleecy white clouds, watching the vast oceans, the earth and its people spread out far, far below, like a relief map, all the while experiencing a sense of isolation, far away from the madding crowds? Well that's what an airhostess undergoes as she undertakes one flight after another during her highly exciting and challenging  career.  As the name suggests, an  Airhostess is indeed the mistress of all she survey in side an aircraft during flights. Inside the aircraft, she is the one who seems to be here, there and everywhere, greeting every passenger with a smile, elegantly guiding each to his or her seat, generously helping a passenger get settled, co-ordinating security personnel, giving directions to the caterers and doing a myriad things.

In most cases it is the girls who prefer this career although boys can do the same job as stewards. Every girl dreams of becoming an airhostess. Airhostess is very glamorous and exciting as it includes flying and traveling at free of cost.  However, it should be said that this is only partially true. The job is nowhere as easy as it seems. The responsibilities of an airhostess range from passenger service and safety to the skillful handling of difficult passengers, which calls for a lot of PR work.

The work of an Airhostess starts some time before the flight with the briefing given by the senior flight attendant. This includes question and answer sessions that would require you to be very thorough with safety, take-off and service procedures. This is followed by a safety check on the aircraft, where you would have to check the safety equipment, mikes, life jackets, stocks of pillows, blankets, books, plates, glasses, napkins and medicines, etc. as well as the cleanliness.

After the passengers board the flight the job includes assisting passengers to settle down. Special care is needed in case of VIPs, children, handicapped passengers etc.   It is also the duty of an airhostess to explain the safety procedures and serve the passengers throughout the flight. In case of an emergency during the flight, you need to take responsibility and determine the most appropriate steps to deal with the situation.

CAREER PROSPECTS  :

Starting off as an airhostess, you have to take progressive examinations for promotions and attend the refresher courses to keep abreast of the latest technology.

There is every chance that you can then be promoted to the post of Senior Flight Attendant and then Head Attendant. Your career as an air hostess would last for about eight to ten years, after which you could move on to the ground duties including the job of a Ground Hostess, Check Hostess, etc. or diversify into any one of the other departments in the airline industry.

With privatization and foreign collaboration increasing every day, the future is bright for an airhostess. Most airline offices are looking to increasing their fleet and there is a demand for airhostesses. While it is a fact that most airline offices prefer to advertise when they plan to recruit, candidates may send their resume, along with a photograph, to airline offices on their own initiative.

Scope  :

Civil Aviation Industry in India has made a significant progress during the last two decades. The passenger traffic growth in the Asia Pacific region and particularly the countries in South East Asia is expected to be the fastest followed closely by the South Asian region, especially India.

With the implementation of liberalization policies of the Government of India in the recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in the economy on all fronts including aviation. There has been a general shortage of trained and qualified personnel for the airlines and to meet this growing need

The decade has marked a tremendous growth in air travel and space related operations. An increasing number of aero planes will be required to meet this tremendous operations. An ever increasing number of aero planes will be required to meet this tremendous demand and more aero planes require an increasing need for aircrews . This growth, combined with the retirement of thousands of old aircrews required by the ageing fleet of aircraft causes a steady shortage for crew members .

CAREER PROSPECTS

At present, there is a wide gap between the requirement and availability of technical personnel and the aviation industry is feeling constrained.  The gap is likely to widen further with the retirement of old and experienced technical personnel in the immediate future.   Added to this is the rapid increase in the number of Aircrafts being operated by both the Public and Private sector airlines, which is further demanding more and more AME s.  Thus, there is more than ample scope for a decent, highly remunerative and exciting job in the glamorous field of aviation for those who are well trained in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.

A. Yes. It’s like any other job on the earth, of course, in the sky. The pilots are posted and operated from the airports they are attached to. They have ample free time which can be devoted to the family.

Q  It is believed that the tenure as a Pilot is limited to very short span of time and one has to retire from the services at relatively tender age thus making the rest of his/her life unoccupied.  Is it true?

A. No. It’s a misconception prevails. One can render his/her services as a pilot as long as he/she could live up to the standards specified. Their retirement age is like any other profession between 58 and 60 years.

Q. How important is the role of an AME in an Airliner ?

A. It’s like the heart to a human body. Unless and until the AME nods positive, the voyage is grounded.

Q.  How different is the job from that of Engineers in other fields of transport?

A.  A. It’s different altogether. Every flight has to be certified prior to take off of all the sections viz., Airframes, Radio Equipment, radar system etc., which are equally crucial for a flight.  Any shortcomings in these areas may prove fatal.   Hence, more responsibility lies with AMEs when compared to other modes of transport.

An ever increasing number of aero planes will be required to meet this tremendous demand and more aero planes require an increasing need for aircraft engineers and technicians. This growth, combined with the retirement of thousands of aircraft engineers and technicians over the next five years and the added maintenance required by the ageing fleet of aircraft causes a steady shortage for engineers and technicians.

Aircraft engines, structure and equipment require preventive maintenance based on hours flown unlike automobile engines which are serviced only when broken. Director General of Civil Aviation (D G C A), Govt. of India, requires regular inspections, maintenance and mechanical repair of all the Indian aircraft to be performed only by certified engineers and technicians.

These are some answers given by experts which may act as a mile stone in choosing airline as a career :
